New plans for sustainable regeneration scheme

New proposals have been put forward for the regeneration of a former Northumberland mining village through the creation of a ‘sustainable coastal community’.

Banks Developments is submitting proposals for the first phase of a development of a new community at Cambois. The initial stage will encompass around 470 new homes built on 19 hectares of predominantly brownfield land.

And as well as the new houses, which would be built to high eco-standards throughout, and which would include affordable properties and retirement homes, a wide range of other new facilities would be added, including a town square and park, improved beach access, and retail, leisure and medical amenities.

Renewable energy sources would be utilised to power the new development, which would also have its own combined heat and power facility.

A spokesman for the company said he hoped the coastal location and the proximity to Newcastle and local towns like Ashington would attract buyers.

Justin Hancock, senior planner at Banks Developments, says: “It is acknowledged that Cambois is an area in urgent need of investment and regeneration, and the scheme we are putting forward would completely revitalise the community.

“A range of homes would be built to appeal to all budgets and requirements, from apartments and retirement accommodation to family homes and larger detached dwellings, and they would all be built to the highest environmental standards, in line with our focus on sustainable development.

“Input from local people is central to the proposal that we are submitting for planning approval - we have been carrying out a public consultation process to provide everyone with the opportunity to make their voices and ideas heard, and will continue to consult as the plans go through the assessment process.”
