New College launched in Sunderland

A North East college has officially launched its new £6.5million state-of-the-art Sixth Form on the banks of the River Wear.

City of Sunderland College’s new location, St Peter’s Sixth Form College, was officially unveiled by the University of Sunderland’s Chancellor, former Olympic Athlete Steve Cram MBE and City of Sunderland College Principal, Angela O’Donoghue at a special ribbon cutting event.

Over 500 students ‘moved in’ to the building this September, which is situated next to the University of Sunderland’s Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s.

Steve Cram said: “This wonderful building further improves the exceptional offer Sunderland has in further and higher education. It also enhances the strong links the College and the University enjoy.

“I’m very pleased to have been part of the ceremony which sees City of Sunderland College join the University of Sunderland on the banks of the Wear, creating exciting new opportunities for the future.”

St Peter’s is already enjoying success with all available places for the September 08 intake taken. The College is urging interested students to complete applications for 2009 entry as soon as possible, as it has already received hundreds of student submissions for next year.

Angela O’Donoghue, Principal of City of Sunderland College, said: “We are delighted that our new St Peter’s Sixth Form College is now open and we are receiving such positive feedback from students, staff and the public.

“Given the close proximity of the building to the University of Sunderland, students will be able experience a real ‘campus feel’ while they study here, which will hopefully encourage them to consider higher education and further study as part of their future.”
