Haway, me hearties
While piracy is, of course, a very real concern for people in many areas of the globe, it’s difficult to get past images on peg legs, eyepatches, and shoulder-borne parrots whenever the ‘p’ word is mentioned.
All this meant that we were quite amused to learn that piracy survival courses are regularly run in Newcastle by the Maersk shipping company. Crisis psychologists and security professionals lead the courses at Maersk’s quayside training centre.
Apparently Maersk have trained more than 350 people over the past three years, on a course which includes role-playing and practical exercises in how to behave in attack, hostage and kidnapping situations. We’re thinking of going along to see how good these courses really Arrrr.
