Business School celebrates 20 years at a distance

Students from across the country came together recently to celebrate two decades of Durham Business School’s distance learning programmes.

Three former students who were part of the first ever course 20 years ago attended a special dinner at St Aidan’s College as guests of honour to celebrate the success of the programme.

There are currently 649 students from 77 different countries - including China, the USA and Iceland - enrolled on one of the School’s distance learning programmes.

Since its launch in 1988, 1677 students have graduated from the programme. Durham is also listed in the Financial Times’ world Top 20 Business Schools for delivering this type of programme.

Professor Chris Higgins, Vice-Chancellor of Durham University, said: “Our outstanding distance learning programme has achieved great results in the past 20 years and has produced thousands of expert business leaders and graduates from around the world who are currently working in a variety of sectors.

“Through programmes such as these, Durham Business School is able to extend its high quality teaching to learners from across the globe and this special evening highlighted the spirit of international learning and the level of success which the programme has achieved.”

Professor Rob Dixon, Dean of the Business School, said: “The world has changed enormously since 1988. Business is now a global phenomenon bringing together people from all over the world.

“The issues impacting on business impact on all of us, so it is vitally important that our business leaders of today and tomorrow are equipped with the right skills and understanding to lead us to a sustainable future.

“The wisdom of the decision in 1988 to create distance learning programmes at Durham has been proved time and again. The demand for them has never been greater.”
