Glow lights up Newcastle town walls

Over 500 lights, 1000 litres of biodiesel and dozens of iconic images have transformed Newcastle’s medieval town walls into an after-dark tribute to Geordie heritage and culture.

Glow is a free five-day event using massive light projections to throw the spotlight on the 13th-century town walls from 4.30pm until 9.30pm each night, as part of NewcastleGateshead Winter Festival (11-15 December).

People will be able to play a giant interactive fruit machine featuring symbols of Geordie culture, past and present, which will be projected onto the West Walls between Bath Lane and Gallowgate.

Glow will also light up Sallyport Tower, once one of the main defensive fortifications for the medieval town, which looks out over the quayside and is situated on Tower Street close to City Road.

All of the power generators for the lighting are fuelled by biodiesel - a mix of recycled restaurant oil waste and rapeseed oil - to minimize the carbon footprint of Glow.

Phil Supple, creative director of Glow, found a rich range of images that will be incorporated in the projections including: Bewick engravings of nature; rural landscapes; 1960’s town planning sketches; old NUFC images; historical references to industry, shipping and commerce; maps; and plans.
