Glowmobiles world debut appearance

Artists are racing against the clock to get three brand new Glowmobiles ready for their world debut appearance on Tyneside on New Year’s Eve.

A pedal-powered airship, a musical art-inspired ice-cream van, and a pick-up truck turned Ice Palace, are gearing up to join a glowing parade of mechanical, illuminated vehicles for the NewcastleGateshead Winter Festival.

The final line-up features more than 20 art cars and other vehicles taking to the streets for Glowmobiles on New Year’s Eve (12 noon to 6.30pm). The afternoon will culminate in a parade ending with a fireworks display.

Glowmobiles is presented by culture10 and produced by outdoor performance specialists Walk the Plank.

Stella Hall, creative director of culture10, said: “Glowmobiles will bring the Winter Festival and the year to a spectacular close. We’re looking forward to being entertained and amazed by the three new Glowmobiles that will be exciting additions to this year’s celebrations.”

Glowmobiles is the final of several highlights of the NewcastleGateshead Winter Festival – all of which are free.

Thousands of people have already enjoyed Enchanted Parks, an after-dark walk in Saltwell Park, Gateshead, and Glow, the transformation of Newcastle’s medieval town walls using massive light projections. More have been taking part in outdoor artworks by Yoko Ono, as part of the Winter Festival and one of the largest exhibitions of Ono’s work to date at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art.
