The heat is on for county's changing climate

More floods, worsening wildfire and stronger heat waves are some of the climate change consequences facing Northumberland in the near future, according to a county-wide agenda launched last week.

The Heat is On - a Strategic Framework for Climate Change Planning in Northumberland - combines 18 months of research by the Northumberland Strategic Partnership (NSP) and its partner organisations.

As well as revealing the climate change forecast for Northumberland, which includes an increased intensity and frequency of severe weather events, the report also calls businesses, public services and local communities to action.

Janice Rose, acting executive director with NSP, said: “Climate change is already happening. September’s floods highlighted the impacts of climate change in the county and its real threat to homes, communities and businesses.

“New research has mapped predicted climate changes over the next 30 to 40 years and shows that these changes are accelerating and will bring significant challenges to every aspect of our lives, our communities and natural environment.

“We all need to become better equipped to cope with its consequences and I’d urge people in Northumberland to consider how climate change may affect them in the future.”
