Closing date for awards draws near

It’s one of the many tasks which come along each New Year - sending off the last minute application for award entries. Along with the North East Digital Awards, the nebusiness Awards, the North East Renaissance Awards and the Evening Chronicle’s Environment Awards, entries are also being encouraged for the North East’s Celebration of Learning and Skills (CoLaS) Awards 2009. And all of those are just from this week…

Nominations for the Learning and Skills Council’s CoLaS Awards must be in by midnight on Tuesday 13 January 2009.

Now in its fourth year the CoLaS Awards highlight the sometimes-overlooked achievements of individuals and employers who work for their own personal development or to improve the skills of others.

Phil Green, principal and chief executive at TyneMet College, which is sponsoring the Young Learner of the Year category, said: “We know from our work in the Tyne and Wear area alone that there are hundreds of individuals and employers who put training and education at the heart of everything they do.

“Although they are already reaping the benefits of this commitment, such as bigger profit margins and a more motivated workforce for employers and better career prospects and earning power for individuals, we want to see as many as possible put forward for their chance to win one of these special awards.”

Nominations are being welcomed from across the whole of the North East.

Chris Roberts, regional director for LSC North East, said: “I’m sure that everyone knows a person or an organisation which is a shining example to others when it comes to learning and skills achievements. And what better way to recognise what these people and employers have attained?”
