Jobs to go in Nissan supply chain

A Sunderland car components factory which supplies parts to Nissan has axed nearly three hundred jobs.

The economic slow-down has been blamed for the losses at Unipres, which is axing 200 temporary and 96 permanent jobs, the Unite union has been told. Brian Cole of Unite said workers would be laid off from 31 January.

Temporary staff were informed just before Christmas that they would not be needed in the New Year.

Mr Cole said he was disappointed but not surprised at the job losses at the factory in the city’s Cherry Blossom Way. He said: “There are redundancies happening all over the North East, especially in the car industry, so it is disappointing but not surprising news. We will give the workers all the support that we can.”
