Local food best for breakfast week

This week (25-31 January) is National Farmhouse Breakfast Week, and people in the North East are being encouraged to mark the occasion by using local produce for their morning meals.

The North East England Food & Drink Group (NEEFDG) is leading support for the campaign in the region and is urging the North East public to take part.

A recent study by the University of Bristol found that people who ate breakfast every day were less depressed, had lower levels of stress and experienced better concentration and cognitive function compared with those who skipped the first meal of the day.

Sandy Duncan, lead programme manager for NEEFDG, said: “There is clearly a lot of truth to the saying that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. A healthy breakfast provides an ideal start to the day, and it is important that it should be made from good, fresh food and drink.

“We are fortunate in North East England that we have an abundance of producers who can supply all of the ingredients required for a farmhouse breakfast that is both nutritious and delicious.”

NEEFDG is encouraging participation in Farmhouse Breakfast Week 2009 throughout the North East. Restaurants, cafes, hotels and bed and breakfast establishments, shops, farm shops and farmers’ markets can all get involved and a number of local schools are hosting morning breakfast clubs for their children. For more information on how to get involved or to find an event go to www.farmhousebreakfast.com.

Sandy Duncan added: “Farmhouse Breakfast Week gives producers in North East England the perfect opportunity to demonstrate to the public in the region just how much great food and drink is available locally.”
