Working together to achieve a healthier region
The importance of improving the North East’s lifestyle is on the agenda at an event for businesses in the healthcare sector next month.
Although improving steadily, the North East still has higher rates of chronic disease and lower life expectancy than any other region in England. It is therefore a priority on the local government agenda to improve health and well-being in the region.
Mike Nicholds, chief technology officer at Cels said: “The UK is experiencing rapidly increasing levels of obesity, which in the North East is twenty three per cent higher than the UK national average. In ten or 20 years’ time we could be facing exceptional levels of conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, heart problems and high blood pressure.”
Various sectors in the region currently contribute to promoting a healthier lifestyle, but feel that by working together the goal of creating a fitter region could be more rapidly achieved.
The role of nutrition and exercise in the prevention of disease will be discussed at the Cels Health and Wellbeing being held between on Wednesday 4 March at St James’ Park.
Clinical researchers will discuss evidence supporting the importance of exercise and nutrition in the prevention and treatment of disease. Examples of emerging new technologies in the fitness industry which support creating a healthier population will be exhibited.
