Food group puts the spice into Morrisons
The North East England Food & Drink Group (NEEFDG) has played an instrumental role in placing three product lines from a North East producer into nearly 200 Morrisons stores nationwide.
Maysan Foods is a family run business in Ponteland, established in 1962. It makes oriental pastes and powders from original recipes and supplies both caterers and the general public. The deal, which has led to the employment of two new full time staff, will see the company distribute approximately 140,000 units of produce to 187 Morrisons stores over the next year.
Maysan Foods sales manager John Burn, said: “The contract to supply Morrisons would not have been achieved without the support of NEEFDG. The team was instrumental in the whole process and the effect on our business has been fantastic.
“Initially we thought we might supply Morrison in the North East alone. To secure a deal that covers 187 stores from Aberystwyth in Wales, Birmingham in the midlands, and up to the Scottish borders including all of the North of England, is a superb result.
“We are now considering expanding into the US market and NEEFDG has helped to give us a great platform for development.”
Sandy Duncan, lead programme manager for the North East England Food & Drink Group, said: “One of the key roles of the North East England Food & Drink Group is to facilitate greater producer access to buyers. This means working with contacts in many businesses, ranging from individual local outlets to major national and international retailers. It is work like this that will lead to long term sustainable growth for the sector in the North East.
“It has been a pleasure working with Maysan Foods and they are now well placed to increase their national presence and expand into foreign markets.”
