Ice work from bgroup creative

Ice sports enthusiasts in Durham are preparing for the return of the city’s ice rink thanks to the efforts of a team member here at bdaily Towers.

Durham has been without an ice rink since 1996, when the previous rink was closed, and the resident Durham Wasps team moved to Newcastle to become part of Newcastle United’s short-lived Sporting Club.

This week the BBC’s Inside Out programme focused on the campaign to bring ice skating back to Durham, and took a look at the development of the new site - with some words of wisdom from bgroup creative Rich Endean.

The development of the new ice rink has been lead by the County Durham Ice Foundation, who have been working to bring an ice skating venue to the city for seven years. As one of the foundation’s main spokespeople, Rich has been working with local developers and investors to make the creation of a new skating location a reality.

The CDIF is lead by figure skating coach Christine Eskildsen, whose husband Jan is the entrepreneur behind the development.

Rich said: “Jan has obviously been watching progress of the campaign over the years and it’s been a case of an opportunity cropping up in recent months that he, as a businessman, has decided to jump on and run with. It’s an exciting time at the moment.”

Three sites within the City of Durham are currently being explored for the ice arena, which will be part of a larger leisure complex, including shops, cafes and a gym.
