Conference promotes care as a career

Despite the current recession, the care sector in North East England still has plenty of vacancies and opportunities and is looking for more new people to consider care as a potentially rewarding career.

A one-day conference will be held on Tuesday 10 March at Wynyard Rooms near Billingham. The event hopes to show delegates how they can best promote the care sector to young people in schools and colleges and also to adults seeking work, or a change of career.

Keynote speaker at the conference will be Wendy Balmain, the Deputy Regional Director for Social Care and Partnerships for the North East region, accompanied by Anna McLaren, Regional Development Officer for Skills for Care North East. The conference will be introduced and concluded by Wade Tovey MBE from the School of Health and Social Care at the University of Teesside.

Anna McLaren said: “This is an opportunity to promote the rewarding careers available in the care sector and explore what the sector might look like in the future. When manufacturing, retail and finance jobs are being lost, our sector still has vacancies to fill and we need to get the word out.

“The care sector is likely to need around 1 million more workers by 2025 to cope with the increased demand from an aging population with more complex needs. Anyone thinking of a change of career, looking for a job, or at school or college wondering which path to take should be considering care.

“This conference is aimed at those who provide advice and support to young people or adults exploring career or development options. It will demonstrate the vibrancy of the sector, the rewarding nature of the work involved and hopefully the delegates will take that information and pass it on.”
