Unemployment rockets in North Durham
As the UK learns that unemployment has now passed the 2 million mark, figures reveal a huge rise in the jobless total for one North East area.
The number of Job Seekers Allowance claimants in North Durham has increased from 1371 in February 2008 to 2505 in February 2009, a rise of about 82%.
David Skelton, Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman for North Durham said: “Over a thousand more families in North Durham are suffering from unemployment.
“People are increasingly telling me how worried they are about their jobs and homes.
“This is why I am fighting for the Government to introduce a package to fight unemployment and create new jobs, including tax cuts for companies that create jobs; the removal of all tax on savings for basic rate taxpayers; and investment in retraining schemes.
“North Durham needs action now to reverse this rise in unemployment and restore our economic fortunes.”
