Darling ?depending on' young entrepreneurs
The country is depending on enterprising young people to make sure the UK has a promising economic future, according to the chancellor.
Speaking at Make Your Mark’s Enterprising Young Brits awards, Alistair Darling said it was important to celebrate the work being done to encourage young people to ‘think ahead’ and make the most of their talents.
He said: “Especially at this time when countries like ours are facing recession, it’s important to send out the message that we should be confident and we will get through this. There is a good future out there and it’s well worth making the effort.”
Winners at the awards ceremony, which celebrates the talent and flair of young entrepreneurs, included Priya Lakhani. Her range of Masala Masalacooking sauces is currently stocked in Waitrose and deals have already been struck to supply the products to stores and delis in 30 different countries.
Lakhani said: “It’s in my blood. I look at my parents, uncles and cousins. They have achieved so much. Since I was a little girl my dad has always told me to follow my dreams, stop at nothing and to just go for it.”
The People’s Choice award, voted for by the public, went to 17-year-old Dean Rhodes-Brandon who runs Your Local Cinema. The not-for-profit service provides information on subtitled film screenings for deaf and hearing-impaired people.
