North East to North Pole
While you are reading this, Michael Mitten, the 30-year-old Managing Director of Walker-based engineering firm Houghton International, is en-route to the ice and winds of the frozen Arctic Ocean in his attempt to reach the Geographic North Pole.
After losing his Dad, Ron Mitten, to lung cancer in June 2007, Michael decided to undertake an expedition to the North Pole in order to raise £50,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support to ensure the amazing work Macmillan do in supporting people who live with cancer continues.
The ‘True North’ challenge will see Michael travel for eight days from a floating ice station in the Arctic Circle to the Geographic North Pole. He will be skiing for up to ten hours a day, pulling a 50kg sled at the same time. Temperatures can get down to minus 50 degrees centigrade, compounded to minus 90 degrees with wind chill factored in.
Michael still has a long way to go to reach his target of £50,000. To donate online visit www.justgiving.com/truenorth.
The True North project has teamed up with BBC Look North (BBC1 from 6.30pm) to cover the expedition throughout the time Michael is on the ice. Michael will be making regular calls with updates on progress, the challenges they’ve faced and what lies ahead.
