New award for Northumbria campus
Northumbria University’s campus in the centre of Newcastle has secured another award for its landscape designers, SLR Consulting. http://www.slrconsulting.com/
The Civic Trust Award is the second major award received purely for the landscape element of the scheme which last year also collected a Landscape Institute Design Award.
The Civic Trust Awards attract over 400 entrants, and the criteria for winning is for projects to be recognised as culturally, socially or economically beneficial, while also making a contribution to the quality and appearance of the environment.
At Northumbria University’s City Campus, SLR’s landscape architects were tasked with creating a space that would provide a walkway and activities area between two of the university’s new buildings.
As the campus buildings were for use by Business, Law and Design School students, the design was based on the shape of the human brain to focus on how people use the left and right hand sides of their brain - the left being more analytical, the right being more creative and visual.
Principal landscape architect James Brewer and Associate Mike Goodall were presented with the award by author and presenter Griff Rhys Jones at a ceremony held at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium in north London.
James, who is based in SLR’s Newcastle office. said: “We are delighted to receive this award from an organisation dedicated to helping communities make better places in which to live, work and play.
“It is a true acknowledgement that we have achieved our aim, and theirs, to deliver inspiring places and bring high quality design to the built environment.”
