Unique city centre building set for a ?rebirth'
An unusual Newcastle building is hoping to ‘enlighten’ prospective buyers when it comes onto the market this month.
146 Westgate Road is a former Salvation Army Church built in the 1880s. It was used by the Salvation Army for almost 120 years, before their recent community relocation plan.
John Haley, Associate Director of Investment and Development at Sanderson Weatherall, who are dealing with the sale of the property, said: “We’ve seen a variety of sites come onto the market of all shapes and sizes, but this is a truly unique property. The location alone is a very attractive proposition to developers and with a guide price of £950,000, its appeal lies in its quirky layout and interesting history that is sure to catch the eye and imagination of many perspective buyers.
“Extensive regeneration in the area will also alert buyers to the exciting potential of this property and that it could become a real asset for its purchaser. We’ve had a number of expressions of interest already from both developers and community groups despite the challenging economic climate.”
The western end of Newcastle City Centre has undergone extensive development in recent years, including the mixed-use scheme between Westmorland Road, Waterloo Street and St James’ Boulevard which launched the Quadrant offices, the Holiday Inn Express hotel, restaurants, and Dance City.
