800 Tesco jobs on Teesside
More than 800 new jobs are planned as part of a new Teesside development by Tesco.
The £130 million Teesport distribution centre is set to open in August, and Tesco is launching a recruitment drive through Jobcentre Plus to prepare for the new site.
The facility is expected to take more than 12,000 lorry journeys off Britain’s roads each year, using shipping lanes and rail transport instead.
David Potts, Tesco UK retail operations Director, said: “The benefits of Teesport are twofold and cannot be underestimated in the current climate. This investment is good news for jobseekers and for the environment.
“As well as creating over 800 jobs, it also delivers major environmental benefits through development on brownfield land and, due to its location and on-site rail infrastructure, will significantly reduce the number of lorries on the roads.”
Teesport will replace Tesco’s current non-food distribution centre located in Coventry which is no longer able to cope with the volume of products required to pass through it.
