Region's top women leaders challenged to inspire next generation

Some of the North East’s most influential women are backing a new initiative to raise the aspirations of young women from the region’s schools.

The North East Women Leaders (NEW Leaders) conference will see some of the region’s high flying women and emerging talent coming together to both inspire and offer guidance to students from across the North East on how to make it to the top.

The all day event will be held at Newcastle Business School on 24 April. Over 500 female students aged 16-18 from the region’s schools will attend to listen to high profile speakers from business, the arts and public life, including Margaret Fay, Chair of One North East, Lorna Moran, CEO of NRG, and Erica Whyman, Chief Executive of Northern Stage.

The New Leaders Conference programme has been developed by Central Newcastle High School GDST.

Hilary French, Headmistress at Central Newcastle High School said: “It continues to astound me that in this day and age women are so poorly represented in the top jobs across the country. As one of the top girls’ schools in the country, we want to help redress the balance.

“It is our duty to ensure we educate and nurture our pupils to succeed in life beyond the classroom. In today’s challenging and uncertain economic times, it is more important than ever that we provide our girls with opportunities to develop the independence and self-belief to grow into strong, inspirational women. “We hope that the NEW Leaders Conference will have a long term effect on the potential talent we have in the North East and that all the girls go on to achieve highly in their chosen careers.”

There are still some places available, any Schools wanting to sign up their students for the Conference should contact NEWleaders@schoolsnortheast.com. call 0191 280 5037.
