Tourist Attraction

A self-catering cottage in Northumberland has been nominated for two national tourism awards.

The Hytte in Bingfield near Hexham, Northumberland, has been short listed for the ‘Access for All’ Gold award and the ‘Sustainable Tourism’ Gold award at the annual Enjoy England Awards for Excellence on 23rd April.

The Norwegian-inspired traditional timber Hytte or mountain lodge has a grass roof and has four bedrooms as well as a garden sauna and hot tub. It is the only accommodation in the North East to have been classed as providing ‘Access Exceptional’ as part of the National Accessibility Scheme. The environmental impact of the property is reduced by recycling as much as possible, minimising energy use and using renewable energy, avoiding wasting water and dealing with bathroom waste in a sustainable manner.

An internal electricity meter allows guests to monitor, control and reflect on how much energy they are using throughout their stay. Guests who use above average electricity are charged for the additional units and this “Pay Back” is donated to Northumberland National Park Environment Association, Squirrel Action Greenhead and The Great North Air Ambulance.Sonja Gregory from The Hytte says: “We’re absolutely delighted to have been short listed for these two national awards. It’s very nice to get recognition for all the work we’ve been doing.”
