Step in the right direction for commuter centre launch

This week is National Walk to Work Week, and a business park in Newcastle has marked the occasion with the launch of its own commuter centre.

The Quorum Business Park has launched the initiative in a bid to encourage the 12,000 employees that will eventually be housed in the offices there to take a greener route into work.

The commuter centre is a central hub where employees can go and learn about different sustainable modes of transport and get advice and information including bus timetables and walking and cycling maps.

Quorum’s Commuter Centre manager Laura Kerry said: “Quorum employees will be encouraged to take part in Walk to Work Week via a number of events organised by the Commuter Centre including a pedometer challenge and lunchtime walks.

“People taking part in the pedometer challenge will be asked to record the number of steps they have taken into work and will be given individual feedback on how many calories they have burned off and how much CO2 they have saved. They will also be entered into a prize draw.

“We want Quorum commuters to feel fit and healthy and we are therefore encouraging them to walk to work as part of their future routines - even if it is only one day per week.”

Fergus Trim, Quorum development director, said: “The Commuter Centre is great news. “At Quorum we have more car parking than most but with our superb public transport infrastructure and cycle routes, staff based on site don’t have to rely on their cars and can use the healthier or more sustainable alternatives.”
