Design passion ignited at 'New York Masterclass'
An acclaimed New York architect is hoping to inspire future regeneration in North East England to help the region create sustainable communities.
Built environment practitioners have been invited to attend an open lecture by David Burney, Commissioner of Design and Construction for the city of New York, at Newcastle University on Tuesday 12 May.
David was born in Liverpool and went to New York to work on such projects as the Rose Building at Lincoln Center and the Zeckendorf Towers on Union Square and has since earned himself a reputation as a renowned architect responsible for the Manhattan skyline.
The lecture has been organised to mark the launch of the North East Design Review and Enabling Service, an independent peer review service offering free advice to help people achieve good design and advise how to address planning and sustainability requirements.
The Design Review is managed by IGNITE, the Regional Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Communities in North East England.
Kirsteen Thomson, Lead Executive of IGNITE, said: “The aim of the lecture is to help people understand how participating in Design Review can benefit people and organisations by helping them reach a shared goal of good, sustainable design. Armed with the correct knowledge, sustainable development doesn’t always equal extra costs when it’s integrated into early ways of thinking.
“I would encourage people to come along to the lecture and discuss ways to move a design forward whilst addressing important issues of today which have to be embraced in order to allow the region to become world-class.”
Those interested in attending the lecture and want more information should contact Kim Watson on 0191 229 6301.
