Businesses urged to get on their bikes

The British heart Foundation is calling on all businesses to urge their staff to take their bike to work for ‘Bike to Work Day’ 2009.

The 19 June event takes part during bike to work week, which will ask people to try this alternative transport and donate £1 to the British Heart Foundation.

The day is part of the Smarter Choices Tyne & Wear campaign, which was started to get single occupancy drivers to car share, use public transport or bike or walk to work, highlighting congestion problems while improving air quality and saving money.

Five day-a-week cyclist Stephen Psallidas, Smarter Choices project manager, said: “Bike Week is the UK’s largest mass participation cycling event and we felt it was important for the whole of Tyne and Wear to have a special day in which everyone can be involved, raising money for the British heart Foundation in the process.

“Biking is a great alternative mode of transport, with many benefits from saving money and cutting road congestion, to providing essential daily exercise and improving both health and wellbeing in the workplace.”

“We’re hoping that many local business and staff will be participating in the forthcoming event.”

Any local staff or businesses that wish to take part in ‘Bike to Work Day’ can order a collection tin and find out more at www.gosmarter.co.uk.
