Engineering show returns to region
Thousands of future engineers are set to attend an event this month billed as ‘the engineering world’s Greatest Show on Earth’.
The world’s most advanced humanoid robot, heat seeking technology, a team attempting to break the land speed record and the technology that powers the world’s video games industry will all be featured in this year’s Youth Engineering Show, which takes place at Rainton Meadows Arena in Houghton-le-Spring on 23-25 June.
Last year, YES provided an opportunity for around 4,000 year 7 and 8 students to sample first hand the importance of engineering in modern day life. This year around 7,000 youngsters will visit the event.
YES will feature presentations, interviews, demonstrations and videos about the world of engineering as well as a headlining visit from Honda’s humanoid robot ASIMO.
One North East Manufacturing and Productivity Manager, Dr Colin Herron, said: “The Youth Engineering Show was a huge success in the North East and I am delighted to have the opportunity to host it again.
“The North East has a proud history of nurturing creative engineering talent - from the men who built our railways to the man who designed the iPod, the region has played its part in some of history’s great engineering feats. Hopefully, the YES will help inspire future innovators and demonstrate how engineering can change the world.”
Companies exhibiting at the event include BAE Systems, sub-sea company Perry Slingsby, Nissan and IBM.
Ken Keir, Managing Director, Honda (UK), said: “Honda has supported the Youth Engineering Show since 2005 and I am delighted that we are back in the North East this year with ASIMO. It’s also a great chance for us to showcase other examples of our engineering expertise, such as a British Touring Car Civic, a British Superbike-prepared Fireblade and the newly launched Insight petrol-electric hybrid vehicle.”
