Children's charity cooks up a storm

A culinary event held at TyneMet College this month has raised over £2000 while giving trainee chefs chance to compete against each other.

The Children’s Foundation joined forces with TyneMet in the “Hellova Kitchen” event, which pitched two restaurant teams against one another in the style of the popular ‘Hell’s Kitchen’.

Andrew Dixon, Chief Executive of NewcastleGateshead Initiative, and former Tyne Tees reporter, Andrew Friend, battled it out in the kitchen with their teams of TyneMet catering students to be crowned the winner at the charity event - raising over £2000 for the Children’s Foundation in the process.

David Cheetham, Interim Principal of TyneMet College, said: “The Hellova Kitchen event has been a great success, and we were delighted to welcome so many guests into our restaurant.

“Supporting charitable organisations is a major part of the growing role the college plays in supporting the local community, and we were only too happy for students to showcase their talents to raise funds for a very deserving charity.”

Volunteers from the Children’s Foundation supported the two teams of chefs as they entertained each table of guests to win ‘tips’ for the charity fund.

The fundraising total on the evening was given another boost by an auction of work donated by some of the gifted art and design students at the college.

Caroline O’Doherty, Operations Director of the Children’s Foundation, said: “Hellova Kitchen was a fantastic event. Both Andrew Dixon and Andrew Friend worked very hard in the kitchen to serve up delicious food and our trustees delivered fantastic service to our guests.

“Our winner, Andrew Friend, was challenged on the evening by Ramy Zack, owner of the Biscuit Factory, and we hope to have both back at Tyne Met College next year competing for the now coveted title.”
