Deloitte team delivers a winning formula

A multi-disciplinary taskforce created two years ago by business advisory firm Deloitte is celebrating its success after delivering multi-million pound projects across the North East.

The Education and Skills consulting team is lead by Newcastle-based Deloitte public services partner David Harker. He said: “Our role is all about translating Government policy into strategy on the ground and making it happen, often working with a number of local authorities in the children’s services area.”

The team has recently completed a project for the Learning & Skills Council - From Competence to Excellence project, enabling 700 apprentices in the region to take advantage of enhanced training opportunities.

“What we are seeing is phenomenal growth for a relatively newly formed multi-disciplinary team at a time when the education sector is also going through a period of growth and transformation,” said Janet McGuigan, the team’s senior manager. “In this time of recession, education coupled with training and skills development is even more important in terms of finding and sustaining employment.

“The LSC Competence to Excellence project is a great example of how Deloitte has worked with providers in the North East region and helped them to respond to the challenges of engaging young people and employers in apprenticeships while raising skill levels from competent to excellent.”

Those taking part include Darlington College, Middlesbrough College, New College Durham, Newcastle College, Northumberland College, Redcar and Cleveland College, and TDR Training Ltd.

She added: “Deloitte recognised the evolving demands of the education and skills sector and in response set up a consulting team in 2007 to support leaders and managers across the sector. The team has had to grow to meet that demand.”
