FA delegation makes first visit to Tyneside
Newcastle and Gateshead will today host the first official visit from the Inspection Team representing England 2018 to assess Tyneside’s capabilities to host World Cup football.
Following the recent launch of their bid to host World Cup Football in either 2018 or 2022, delegates from the Inspection Team will assess Newcastle and Gateshead’s Host City credentials, including the suitability of St James’ Park as a World Cup venue.
During the visit the delegation will visit a number of sites including Newcastle Academy, Gateshead Stadium, Newcastle Falcons, Newcastle Racecourse, St James’ Park and The Angel of the North.
As part of England’s overall bid, Newcastle and Gateshead are currently bidding alongside 14 other UK towns and cities.
Following England 2018’s Inspection Team visit to each prospective Host City, the FA will name the successful Host Cities in December 2009 as part of its overall bid which will be submitted to FIFA.
Andrew Dixon, Chief Executive of NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: “NewcastleGateshead has a fantastic track record for hosting large international events, such as the Great North Run and the Euro ’96 tournament, so we hope they enjoy their visit here and experience the same buzz and excitement that international football fans will enjoy if NewcastleGateshead is selected.”
Mick Henry, Leader of Gateshead Council said: “We’re confident that NewcastleGateshead already offers many of the requirements set out by England 2018 for being a Host City but when we reach 2018 our ‘twin cities’ will be even better.
“There will be more hotel beds in the city, improved transport links and the on-going development of the Newcastle and Gateshead quaysides will see the introduction of new public and commercial spaces.
“This is a very exciting time for NewcastleGateshead.”
