A level results bring hope to future economy

Business leaders have praised the ‘commendable’ grades of the region’s A level students, saying the results are important as the youngsters will become integral to the future of the economy.

A level results announced yesterday were the highest they have ever been, with 97.5% of people passing, Gateshead overall managed an impressive 99.4% of pass rates, with Whickham Comprehensive school obtaining 100% success.

James Ramsbotham, chief executive of the North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC), said: “As we look towards economic recovery it will be increasingly important to the region to have skilled individuals to provide our future workforce.

“With record numbers of young people proving their excellence, we must now ensure the support is there for them to continue their education or into employment so they can make the most of their talent.”

Recent news has highlighted the lack of university placements, but back in July 10,000 more places were added to the already extended numbers, with Gordon Brown saying: “We will provide more places than have ever been announced.”

The Chair of Schools North East, David Pearmin, said: “As A level pass rates improve again, the annual chorus of ‘easier exams and dumbing down of qualifications’ echoes round the media.

“The point has been made that Usain Bolt’s smashing of the 100 meters world record this week does not signal that the event is getting easier; rather that athletes are getting better, sports science has improved and that preparation, coaching and training techniques are more effective than ever before.

“The results deserve our warmest congratulations as they reflect the hard work and dedication of our students and the expertise, commitment and support of schools, teachers and parents.”
