North East bakery?s recipe for business success

A young North East entrepreneur is planning the continuing rise of his bakery business with the help of a six-figure business investment.

Greg Phillips, managing director of North East Bakery, has built a 13-strong chain of Nichols-branded High Street stores across the region since setting up the business five years ago.

The £100,000 investment, which comes from NEL Fund Managers, will be used to fund an investment in equipment for the firm’s main bakery at Newburn.

North East Bakery employs around 140 people, and has just opened a new flagship Nichols store in Newcastle’s Eldon Square shopping centre.

The company’s wholesale side has also grown alongside its retail offering, and it now supplies bakery and confectionery products, sandwiches, pies, pasties and patisserie items to regional and national customers.

Greg Phillips said: “The growing industry awareness of North East Bakery as a wholesaler is creating a virtuous commercial circle for us, and we’re getting an increasing number of enquiries from major companies who are noticing the success we’re having in working with their peers.

“Increasing our production capacity is crucial if we want to be able to secure contracts with these industry leaders, and we decided to look at the options available on the investment market to pay for the equipment we need to do this.”
