Little and large loved-up lobsters
A Tynemouth aquarium has inadvertently played cupid to a pair of mismatched crustaceans during a routine clean-out of one of their lobster tanks.
Lobsters “Big” and “Small”, as they have been nicknamed, came together by accident but now keepers at the Blue Reef aquarium think the giant crustacean may have developed a serious crush on his new tank-mate.
The friendship began when keepers decided to add some fresh seaweed to Big’s display. It was only when they came in the following morning that they realised it had been more than just seaweed that they had collected.
Blue Reef’s Anna Etchells said: “When I arrived at work the next day there was this tiny little lobster being held protectively between Big’s giant claws.
“Our initial reaction was to get Small out but the more we watched them the more apparent it became that the two had struck up an unlikely alliance.
“Big weighs three kilos and is almost three-quarters-of-a-metre long while Small is just 80 grammes and is barely 18 cms long,”
