Sunderland's eastern links strengthened

A Chinese delegation of business and civic leaders is descending upon Sunderland this month to improve ties between east and west.

In May, Sunderland City Council chief executive Dave Smith visited China’s tenth largest city, Harbin, to sign a Friendship Agreement with their Mayor Zhang Xiao Lian.

It is hoped this will promote healthy business, education and cultural links between the cities.

Coun Paul Watson, leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “We’re looking forward to the visit from Harbin and are delighted to be welcoming them to Sunderland and North East England.

“The two cities have many similarities and much to offer each other. We’re hoping to build on the excellent relationship we’ve already established to foster long-lasting commercial relations and build economic ties that will benefit the people of both cities in the years ahead.”

The delegation will arrive on September 13 for a two-day fact finding mission aimed at exploring business opportunities as part of the new relationship.

During their stay, the Chinese party will tour key sites including the Doxford International, Rainton Bridge and Turbine business parks.

Coun Watson added: “Harbin is a great city with huge economic potential. As China continues the growth of its economy, it’s important we work hard to develop the relationship and bring long term benefits.

“We’ve already seen our friendship make an impact, particularly with our school partnerships.”

Nine schools have begun working with schools in Harbin as part of the friendship agreement involving children in primary, secondary and special schools.

Businesses are invited to attend the Investment Seminar on Monday 14 September at the Evolve Software Business Centre between 10am and 11:30am. To register contact cheryl.jones@sunderland.gov.uk.
