LSC sees more businesses wanting to train staff

In a recent interview with bdaily, the regional director of the Learning and Skills council said they had seen a “big upturn” in businesses seeking training.

Gillian Miller said the recession has seen more training for employed people, and more competition for young adults.

Gillian said: “There has been a big upturn in businesses accessing training for their staff through our Train to Gain programme.

“This region is one the fastest, if not the fastest, growing region for Level Two qualifications.

The recession has meant more strain on the £7.7m the LSC has available for qualification training, and the council has seen a difference in the type of help that is needed, and the problems for young adults.

“One of the characteristics of the recession is there has been a big upturn in access to training for those that are in employment.

“For the people who are not in employment there are more options for them to get the skills to get back to work.

“You can understand that an employer who has a 16-year-old on one hand, and a 25-year-old, who has a lot more experience, on the other, it makes it very difficult for younger people to get employed.”
