Fashionable bid for Culture Capital

Durham’s bid to become the UK’s first City of Culture in 2013 received a boost after an award-winning fashion retailer became the latest business to show their support.

Van Mildert has launched a shop window display with t-shirts emblazoned with the slogan ‘Back The Bid’ at its store on Elvet Bridge.

The county’s effort to be UK City of Culture is part of a programme to attract more visitors and generate more business and Durham will have to ward off stiff competition from the likes of Sheffield and Birmingham if it is to win the title.

Jane Smith, Van Mildert’s store manager, said: “I think that Durham’s bid for City of Culture will give people across the UK a glimpse of what Durham has to offer in terms of fashion and culture.

“It’s quite a haven for fashionistas, we dress the likes of the Pet Shop Boys and the county has so many different types of culture, whatever your interest.”

Mrs. Smith has urged the whole of the North East to log onto the official website and get behind the idea as she believes the entire region’s business economy stands to benefit if the bid proves to be a success.

Melanie Sensicle, Chief Executive of Visit County Durham, who is happy with Van Mildert’s contribution, added: “This is a great show of support and we a re grateful to businesses that are getting behind the bid.

“Being City of Culture will provide a lasting legacy and improved quality of life for the people of County Durham.”
