Tyneside artist honoured in American awards

Tyneside-based visual artist Kelly Richardson is to be honoured as featured artist at the American National Arts Awards 2009.

The accolade puts Kelly up alongside previous featured artists such as Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali.

The National Arts Awards brings together five hundred of America’s top artists and philanthropic and corporate leaders once a year to celebrate the achievements of individuals who have exhibited outstanding leadership in the visual and performing arts, arts education, advocacy, and philanthropy.

Only seven awards are handed out each year and this year’s recipients include actor Robert Redford for the Lifetime Achievement Award, Salman Rushdie (Artistic Excellence Award), and actress Rosario Dawson (Young Artist Award).

Past recipients of the awards include Yoko Ono, Dame Julie Andrews, and Uma Thurman.

Kelly Richardson and husband Mark Jobe of Quay Animation, also based in Tyneside will be attending the Awards event on October 5th in New York City.

Kelly said: “Being featured artist for these awards is a huge honour. I’m very proud to be representing Tyneside and the UK in the International arts arena.”

In the past Kelly’s work has been presented internationally at various venues including the Beijing 798 Biennale and the Sundance Film Festival.
