Mobile beauty up for top award

A woman who operates a beauty salon from a 1960s trailer is among the 31 finalists revealed this week in the 2009 North-East Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Awards.

Kerry Lewis, owner of My Little Beauty in Darlington, County Durham, which offers everything usually found in a modern salon but operates from a 1960s American Airstream trailer, has been shortlisted in the ‘Best New Business’ category of the annual Women Into the Network awards.

She joins 30 other female entrepreneurs on the shortlist, who run a range of businesses from waste management to a company specialising in organic children’s party bags.

The Awards, now in their 10th year and sponsored by Business Link, have been refocused by the board of the new WIN Ltd to include two brand new categories that reward both pre-start up and inspirational entrepreneurs.

Chair of the judging panel, previous North East Woman Entrepreneur of the Year and SCM Pharma director Fiona Cruickshank said: “The high quality of our nominees speaks for itself.

“For new and smaller businesses, winning one really can provide a springboard to growth, add real credibility to what they are doing, and provide fantastic marketing opportunities.

“As we enter the tenth year of the Awards, we continue to be astounded by the amount of talent here in the North East – and wish all the nominees the best of luck.”
