Recession Hit Organisations Awarded £850,000

33 charities and organisations in Tyne & Wear have received a share of over £850,000 in grant funding to see them through the recession thanks to the Community Foundation.

The Targeted Support Fund, a ‘rapid response’ initiative by Government in response to the recession, saw over 50 applications from organisations with recession-focussed services for grants of up to £40,000.

South Tyneside Churches Key Project was awarded a grant of £40,000 to develop several services for young people in South Tyneside. The first project will see the employment a liaison officer and an administration officer to develop a partnership with South Tyneside Credit Union and is keen to increase the awareness of the Credit Union amongst young people who could be susceptible to homelessness.

Secondly, Key will be running three half-day workshops for young people concentrating on debt and how to handle money and will be run in conjunction with South Tyneside CAB and South Tyneside Credit Union.

Jean Burnside from South Tyneside Key Project said: “The money from the Targeted Support Fund is absolutely invaluable at the moment, we work with a lot of young people in South Tyneside who are at risk or becoming homeless as a direct result of the recession and rising unemployment. We now have the opportunity to work with more young people to prevent this from happening. “

Karen Daglish, Assistant Director - Fund Management, at the Community Foundation managed the Fund. She said: “The Targeted Support Fund has made a great deal of difference to organisations in Tyne & Wear, at the Community Foundation we are really seeing the affects of the recession on smaller charities and organisations and this boost to their funding means that they can carry on working effectively with the people in their communities.”

The Targeted Support Fund is now closed to applications but the Community Foundation is always on the lookout for quality applications to its other funds. For more information visit http://www.communityfoundation.org.uk or call 0191 222 0945.
