Wansbeck in running to be named enterprising capital of UK
Wansbeck will discover this week if it has been named the most enterprising place in the UK.
It is up against 11 other finalists, representing all parts of the UK, in the prestigious 2009 Enterprising Britain competition.
Earlier this year Wansbeck was named the North East regional winner, and in the summer a team of judges visited the area to meet some of the new businesses which have received assistance from Go Wansbeck, one of 20 Local Enterprise Growth Initiatives in England.
Martin Townshend, Go Wansbeck programme manager, said: “Winning would be the icing on the cake and fantastic recognition of the efforts of the Go Wansbeck team and – above all – the hard work and ingenuity of the new businesses which have started and developed in the Wansbeck area.”
In two-and-a-half years Go Wansbeck has offered more than £1m funding to over 200 new and growing businesses, helped create more than 300 new jobs and provided business coaching for 400 people.
Martin said: “Although it seems a long time ago now, the national judges told us how much they enjoyed meeting people who had set up their own business and how impressed they were.
“Winning the North East competition was a great thrill. We would love to be named the most enterprising place in the UK, but know that we are up against very strong opposition.”
