North East venues join world cup bid
Two North East cities today won the right to host World Cup matches in 2018 if England wins its bid to host the tournament.
Sunderland United’s Stadium of Light and St James’ Park in Newcastle were selected as two of 15 stadia to host matches.
Both venues have been running campaigns to ensure their inclusion in the list for the past few months.
Yorkshire and the North West also got in on the action with grounds in Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, and Liverpool all chosen.
Derby County and Leicester City missed out.
However, grounds in Birmingham, Bristol, London, Milton Keynes, Nottingham, and Plymouth were all successful.
Football League and selection panel chairman Lord Mawhinney announced the successful cities and stadiums.
A final decision on the hosts for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups will be made by FIFA in December 2010.
