79-year-old paperboy reaches retirement age
One of Britain’s oldest paperboys will be hanging up his bag after the New Year.
Angus Armstrong, 79 and from Ovington, has braved the worst weather Northumberland could offer since he took up the post on Boxing Day in 1993.
Since then he has carried out two deliveries a day because of the closure of the village shop.
Mr Armstrong said: “I’ve been doing it for so long, I will miss it. But I knew I’d have to retire eventually and, since I’m turning 80 next year, it seemed about time to call it a day.’
The former pitman added: “I won’t have to get up at 5am anymore, but mornings never bothered me anyway as I’ve always worked shifts in the past.”
