Over 500 jobs secured at Nissan
Up to 400 new jobs will be created - as an additional 160 positions are secured - at Nissan’s Wearside plant as it re-launches its third production shift.
The Japanese car giant said it would begin recruiting next month for posts on a third production line for the popular Qashqai model as demand outstrips supply.
A new nightshift will be added in May, although the company said the market would dictate how long the shift would remain in operation.
The Wearside plant was this week named the UK’s most productive car factory for the 12th year in succession.
At the height of the economic downturn it was forced to cut back on production and staff numbers but has now experienced an upturn in demand and expects the new shift to remain viable for at least six months.
Trevor Mann, Nissan senior vice president for manufacturing, Europe said: “Qashqai continues to buck the trend of a generally depressed market, and we have now identified the need for an additional shift to cover a high volume request in the first half of the 2010 Financial Year.”
