Jobs boost at repair group
A new firm has revealed plans to create up to 100 new jobs in the region as it gets to work repairing the North East’s winter-ravaged roads.
Infrasafe, of Blaydon, officially begins trading today and will initially take on at least 50 new employees.
The company has evolved out of 15-year-old railway repair firm Railsafe Systems, and will now focus on fixing roads as well as rail networks.
The group will also conduct safety training, construction, maintenance, repairs and environmental work such as graffiti removal, litter picking and fly tipping clearance.
It has set its sights on the region’s road network, which has been left in a less-than-perfect condition by the severe winter.
Icy conditions have caused an increase in cracks and potholes in the nation’s roads as water seeps into gaps in the tarmac, freezes and expands.
As the newly-restructured business takes off, more jobs are expected to follow the initial 50 and, depending on its performance, as much as 100 new positions could ultimately be created.
Chief executive Les Savory said: “There are signs that we are emerging from the recession and now is the time to diversify.
“We have always been perceived as a rail-only provider. However, our skills, experience and certifications allow us to operate across a range of private and public sectors and organisations.
“Our plan is to retrain, recruit and develop the business from todaythroughout the north. As far as our existing customers are concerned the
change will be seamless. However, we will now be expanding into new markets and targeting new road-related customers. Pot holes have got to be a priority.“
In-house training for new recruits will be provided at the firm’s head Office at Railsafe House on Blaydon’s Whiteley Road, Blaydon.
The firm already has existing contracts with local authorities in the North East, and intends to begin working with these organisations on new projects as soon as possible.
