Airport bolsters security
Newcastle International Airport has invested £300,000 in new equipment to boost security and reduce the threat of terrorist attacks.
The airport is to install new ‘anti back-track’ doors to prevent passengers and members of the public from breaching security between airside and landside zones.
The technology automatically identifies people attempting to enter an area through an exit door and, upon detection, activates a series of alerts to allow an operator to respond to the threat.
The passengers are initially alerted by an audio message, and if the behaviour continues, the doors will close.
The automated system is currently in operation in several terminals and is used to ensure the smooth flow of passengers while removing the reliance on manual security checks.
As well as monitoring the flow of passengers, the system detects people standing near the exit lane.
The doors are to be installed by Merseyside firm Human Recognition Systems on the exit doors from international and domestic baggage reclaim into the arrival halls.
