Falcons fundraise for Fusiliers
The Newcastle Falcons rugby team is using its match against London Wasps on Sunday 7 February as a special fundraiser for the 2nd Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers Northern Region.
On a first come first served basis tickets in every stand will be priced at a maximum of £10 for adults and £5 for concession and junior tickets.
The Falcons will donate a percentage of ticket sales to the regiment and should the Falcons win the game they will also donate match prize money to the appeal.
The Regiment has served in every major campaign dating back to 1674. Most recently the 2nd Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers Northern Region has served in Afghanistan and Iraq, with funds raised at the Falcons v Wasps game going towards the families of those who have died or been injured on active duty.
Falcons chairman, Dave Thompson, said: “We were drawn to this cause because we heard the troops had been collecting on Northumberland Street, due to getting little help from elsewhere.
“These men and women put their lives on the line for their country, sacrificing a day of their own wages every year just to pay for their own insurance in the event of facing injury or hardship. This Battalion has had injuries from Afghanistan and even lost some men, so the charity helps those injured or the families.”
Local dignitaries will be present, and the initiative has received the full backing of Falcons fans.
Supporters Club chairman Martin Peagam said: “It is fantastic that the Falcons are behind this, and that the fans have a chance to get involved.
“Our military give such outstanding service to their country, and the opportunity to show them how much they are appreciated will be a welcome one, I am sure.”
Regimental Area Secretary, retired Captain Tony Adamson said: “We are thrilled that the Falcons have taken up this initiative, and hope as many people as possible will turn out on the day to help raise funds for our injured troops and their families.”
