North East to host science channel

The North East is to become the base for an online science channel after production company Ten Alps was awarded two years of production funding.

Ten Alps has been selected by regional development agency One North East to provide a pilot launch of the Newton HD channel.

The North East-based channel will act as a pilot for the rest of the country, and will bring with it media employment opportunities in TV production, web development and distribution.

Ten Alps is partnering with Newcastle Science City, the Science Museum, the Royal Institution and the Open University on the project, while will also be working alongside the group.

In a statement from the firm CEO Alex Connock said: “Newton is a potentially ground‐breaking online science project with blue chip partners, and it’s an ideal media property to develop in the North East, given the regional focus on science, and the degree to which it has not benefited from media investment in line with other regions.

“Our next goal in Newcastle is to build a wider production unit called Ten Alps Science, to deliver Newton and separately provide broadcast TV programming to national and international clients.”

Ten Alps is planning for the site to be self-funding following on from the two-year pilot period. Money will be created through “programme sales, sponsorship, online advertising, content syndication and events.”
