Recruitment rolls on at tyre recyclers
A North East recycling firm is on a recruitment drive as it taps in to a new market for scrap tyres.
Wallsend-based North East Tyre Recycling will create new jobs by becoming one of the first firms in the North to manufacture tyre bales to a new British standard.
Tyre bales are seen as an environmentally friendly way of making use of scrap tyres, and are used for various purposes in the construction industry.
The company has invested in the design and manufacture of a specialised hydraulic tyre baler, and in a staff training program to ensure the balesare manufactured to consistent quality standards.
In the last few years new legislation on the safe disposal of old tyres hasmeant that the recycling industry has had to come up with an environmentally friendly solution to tyre recycling.
The environmental credentials of the bales are two-fold as they solve the problem of disposing of scrap tyres, and save contractors using finite resources such as gravel or stone.
The need for a BSI standard for the bales was driven by the construction industry, who wanted a standard size, with standard engineering characteristics.
While the bales are already a popular material, North EastTyre Recycling is now working with the construction industry to identify new uses for the tyre bales.
The company believes that educating the construction industry is its next step to making the most of the product.
Peter Moody, North East Tyre Recycling managing director, said: “The BSI standard is a great step forward for the tyre recycling industry and we intend to be market leaders in the supply of PAS 108 bales here in the UKand the EU.
“We have invested in machinery and training, and are in interesting discussions with the civil engineering and marine construction sectors.
“These bales answer the challenge of environmentally friendly tyre recycling while providing civil engineers with a product of consistent quality and known physical properties.”
North East Tyre Recycling collects scrap tyres from garages, councils and industry throughout the north of England and southern Scotland. The firmplans to sell the bales on to companies across the UK and Europe.
