Harry and Sally take the top spot

Cinema-loving North Easterners have voted 80s rom-com When Harry Met Sally as the film they most want to watch on Valentine’s Day.

After the success of last year’s online poll for the North East’s favourite romantic film, Newcastle’s Tyneside Cinema asked the public again for their number one Valentine’s movie.

The cinema saw hundreds of votes cast as members of the public desperately tried to get their (or their partner’s) much loved slushy up on the big screen on Valentine’s Day itself.

Last year’s winner The Notebook was in close competition with the likes of Casablanca and Brief Encounter, but the top slot was taken by When Harry Met Sally, starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal.

The film will be screened at the Tyneside Cinema on Sunday 14 February at 8.00pm. The Tyneside will also be screening the classic Breakfast at Tiffany’s over Valentines weekend.

Tyneside Cinema’s Cinema Programme Manager Jonny Tull said: “Over the last year we’ve seen how much the public like getting involved in programming the Tyneside, with the success of the North East’s favourite romantic film proving this once again. We’re really pleased with the response we’ve had to these public votes and will definitely be giving them more opportunities to programme the cinema.”

As well as last year’s Valentine’s vote, the Tyneside also gave their patrons a chance to pick their favourite scary movie for Halloween and programme a whole day of films for their first birthday. The cinema plans to repeat this event for their second birthday this May.
