Botox centre launched on Tyneside

One of the world’s leading authorities on the use of Botox for medicinal purposes has launched a nationally-focused business to market the treatment on Tyneside. Long before Botox became popular among Hollywood celebrities looking to lose their wrinkles, Professor Mike Barnes pioneered it across the world as the solution to an array of medical problems. Over the last 25 years, Prof. Barnes has helped thousands of people with previously untreatable problems such as muscle spasticity - caused by stroke or brain injuries - chronic headaches, migraines and mobility difficulties. He has delivered more injections of the substance than anyone on the planet, is recognised as the world’s leading authority on its usage and regularly travels the world to train healthcare authorities on how to administer it safely. Meanwhile in the UK, there is growing demand for the treatment since it is not always covered by the NHS despite its obvious life-changing properties. To tap into this demand Prof. Barnes has launched Barnes Cosmetic and Medical Clinic in Newcastle, which has already attracted clients from up and down the country in the weeks since it opened its doors. Prof. Barnes said: “I decided to open the clinic because I kept getting requests from people for treatments that the NHS would not pay for. “I started in the industry when it was quite a controversial treatment, but over the last 20 years it has become recognised as a solution to problems which may have been hitherto untreatable. “It can act as a relaxant for people with muscle spasms or disorders such as dystonia, it can treat back and neck pain, excessive sweating and excessive dribbling which can be common among Parkinson’s disease or cerebral palsy sufferers. “My small team in Newcastle has given more injections than anyone else in the world, and I will be looking to train more nurses to do it as I expand the business in the coming months.? As well as his new business, Prof. Barnes runs Gateshead-based Hunters Moor Neuro Rehab, which helps people who are disabled due to brain injuries and plans to open a second clinic in the Midlands later this year. He is also the Honorary Professor of Neurological Rehabilitation at Newcastle University, Founder President of the World Federation of Neuro Rehabilitation and a former president of the British Society of Rehabilitation Medicine. Although Barnes Clinic expects to help hundreds of patients with medical problems this year, it is also aiming to be a safer alternative for cosmetic treatments in what is a largely unregulated business. While Prof. Barnes and his team of nurses have spent the last 25 years developing their understanding of how Botox works, the substance can be administered by hairdressers or beauticians with very little experience. The company’s team originally worked out of Hunters Moor Hospital in Newcastle before moving to their new home on Blandford Square in the Dovetail cosmetic dentistry centre.
