Jobs secured by new facility

Jobs at an engineering firm have been safeguarded with the opening of a new facility on the South bank of the Tyne which will enable it to handle larger project

IHC Engineering Business (EB), which was formerly based at Hadrian Yard on the North bank of the river, has opened a new large-scale manufacturing and support facility at Port of Tyne in South Shield

The new base will allow the company to upscale its presence in the oil and gas services sector and bid for contracts for work on larger offshore and sub-sea vessel

The move by the Riding Mill business is expected to safeguard around 20 jobs and is aimed at making the Riverside Quay facility an attractive winter and downtime base for vessels by offering reasonable berthing charges, alongside support and engineering service

A major investment is being made to upgrade the 7484m2 of covered space by installing hydraulic and electrical cleans rooms, overhead craneage, office facilities, secure storage, and project offices for clients operating from the bas

The new base will also enable the company to continue delivering its custom-built offshore and sub-sea equipment. Mick Beezer, IHC’s newly appointed offshore support base manager, said: “The development of our new support base business is a further commitment to offer our clients a full range of services from concept design right through the operational life of equipment and vessel

“The base at Riverside Quay allows us to offer a single point of contact and management for a broad range of support services, all at one sit

Andrew Moffat, CEO of the Port of Tyne said: “We believe this not only cements the position of a hugely successful and growing business in the North East but also retains some highly skilled jobs in the region, it also marks a milestone in the port’s development and is another example of the diversification in our business model.”
